Shafi J. Ahmed, MD, or “Jakir” as friends and family would call him, was born in Jessore, Bangladesh, and migrated to the United States in 1984. Shafi has remained engaged in several social organizations throughout his career while maintaining a busy medical practice. In 1989, while living in Dallas, TX, he was instrumental in the founding of the first Bangladeshi organization in Texas, Bangladesh Association of North Texas (BANT) as well as having served in its first organizing committee as an Executive Member. After moving to Michigan, he was an Adviser to the Bangladesh Association of Michigan and later served as the President of the Bangladesh Medical Association of North American (BMANA) Michigan chapter. He moved forward to become the President of the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) of Michigan, and then Chairman of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) International section. He was also elected as the President of Genesee County Medical Society, Michigan.
In 2014, The United States Congress passed a resolution honoring Dr. Ahmed’s leadership role and his contribution to society.
He currently lives in Ortonville, Michigan, USA.
